The Norfolk Portal
The Norfolk Portal is a shared search facility that joins together the websites of all Norfolk Councils and additional partners. This means that if someone visits the Norfolk County Council site and is looking for Pest Control, they can “Search Wider” from the search results, to find relevant results from the district councils.
The extension of this facility to provide a joint A-Z means a visitor to Broadland district council who uses their A-Z to find out about Adoption will be taken directly to the correct page of the Norfolk County Council website.
This allows customers to get quickly and easily to the information or online services they need without needing to know who provides them. It is a key part of the functionality of all of our websites, powering the search tool and joint A-Z. It was set up as part of each partner’s existing branding and marketing rather than a separate site, which would have to be marketed separately at considerable expense.
It has continued to develop and is also now used by Norfolk Constabulary and Connexions services. The portal searches a wide range of local public and voluntary sector sites in addition to those of its core partners. It also now links to Direct Gov so people can quickly and easily get to local information from that national portal. Developments in train will provide further access still from parish and town council and voluntary and community sites. Networks associated with the portal and its services such as the web managers’ forum, and Norfolk communication officers network also help to link information and promote take up of the self-service option.

The Norfolk Portal is the key source of information for all partner staff to allow them to answer queries and manage referrals on behalf of other partners. This means that whichever channel the public choose, they should be able to get a definitive answer to questions about any partner. The “before and after” mystery shopping exercises demonstrate that this ambition has been substantially achieved.

Regular monitoring reports on portal use show the percentage of people who start in one site and seamlessly find the answer to their question on another one.

The portal has continued to develop and NCP facilitates joint working by web managers across the county. Developments have included the joint A-Z of services, adding further partner sites.
